Yoshi sat there and thought to himself, “Will tonight be my last night on the river?” He tried not to think about it very much. But fishing was his life, but more importantly, he knew that fishing was Grandfathers life too. Inside Yoshi felt sad, but he had to get that out of his head so he could focus on fishing. The loud squawking of the cormorants, and the visions of Kano in Yoshi’s head, were very distracting. He glanced over at the bamboo baskets where the birds were kept, and saw their glowing black eyes. He knew it was time. Magic on the Night River, by Eve Bunting follows the plotline and symbolism of a true comedy.
Magic on the Night River follows the comedic plotline. In the beginning they are living everyday normal life. Yoshi and grandfather were getting ready for fishing, like they always do. The second plot is where the conflict arises. Grandfather and Yoshi aren’t catching many fish. In the third plot the main character fully realizes the problem. The problem in this story is that Kano, the main character, rents his boat to Yoshi and Grandfather, in return Kano gets half of the fish they catch. Kano sees that the number of fish they catch is getting lower. Finding another fisherman that could bring in more fish would be no problem. Resolution occurs when grandfather and Yoshi take the birds off of their leashes. The birds are then able to catch a lot more fish. Its back to everyday life when Kano decides that Yoshi and Grandfather can keep using the boat.
Magic and the night river also follows the symbolism of a comedy. The comedic sky is stars on page 1 it says “drifting to the sky where the night stars hung. Earth tones are the symbolic colors of a comedy, and yellow is an earth tone, “the lanterns spilt there yellow glow onto the shine of the water.” Common animals are the symbolic animas for a comedy, cormorants are mentioned a lot and on page one Kano says “the skies are full of cormorants for the taking.”
A good example of a comedy would be Magic on the Night River because it follows the comedic plotline and symbolism. Magic on the night river follows the plotline and has the symbolic sky, colors, and animals.
The Lie
The Web
The letter came in the mail. It was the moment of truth; Eli slowly opened the envelope to find that he had not been accepted to Whitehill. What was he going to do? When his father found out, well, Eli didn’t even want to imagine what would happen! He couldn’t let his father see the letter. Destroying the letter was his best option. Weeks had gone by and his father had no idea about the letter. School was starting soon; it was registration time, and Doctor Remenzel still didn’t know what Eli had done. They were on their way to Whitehill’s registration. Thoughts of the letter and his lie lingered in his head. In Kurt Vonnegut Jr’s short story, “The Lie,” The ironic twist of lying and its consequences is portrayed through both the father and the son.
“The Lie” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr follows the ironic mode. In the beginning Eli is very nervous and he feels sick. On page two it says “don’t believe the boys feeling good doctor.” Chaos is the first plot in an irony. In the beginning we don’t know why Eli is sick or nervous, causing chaos. Secondly is a serious conflict; the serious conflict is when Doctor Warren tells Doctor Remenzel about the letter that he had sent. Doctor Warren explains to Doctor Remenzel that Elis grades weren’t proficient enough. Lastly comes death or symbolism of death. Doctor Remenzel is so angry, that Eli, a Remenzel didn’t get accepted to Whitehill, so Doctor Remenzel goes to the members of the board and asks them to accept Eli because he is a Remenzel. Once again Eli is rejected. On page 11 Doctor Remenzel realizes that Whitehill isn’t the school for Eli, and he says “I don’t suppose,” said Doctor Remenzel, “that we’ll ever be coming here anymore.” This is a symbolic death because the Remenzel family won’t be going to or supporting Whitehill anymore; it’s the death of a relationship.
